Tafsir of Surah Maryam

This is a lecture series delivered by Shaykh Hamid Waqar in Sydney, Australia. In this lecture series Shaykh touches upon the verses of Surah Maryam. The merits of reciting this Surah can be understood by reading the tradition from Prophet Muhammad (s): “Whoever reads this surah will receive ten good deeds for every person who accepted or rejected Zakariya, as well as Yahya, Maryam, Isa, Musa, Harun, Ibrahim, Ishaq, Ya’qub, and Isma’il. He will also receive ten good deeds for all of those who considered Allah to have a son and all of those who did not consider Him to have a son.”

Lecture 1: In this lecture Shaykh discusses the virtues of reciting this chapter and then touches upon verses 1-3. He concentrated on performing worship in secret.

Lecture 2: This is the second segment to a series on the tafsir of Surah Maryam, the 19th chapter in the Quran. In this lecture Shaykh discusses verse 4 and concentrates of the attribute “rabb” (Lord).

Lecture 3: In this lecture, Shaykh discusses the inspirational aspects of Prophet Zakariyyah’s supplication for a son

Lecture 4: In this lecture, Shaykh discusses the meaning of inheritance in Prophet Zakariyyah’s (a) supplication.

Lecture 7: In this lecture, Shaykh discusses more qualities of Prophet Yahya (a), verses 12-13

Lecture 8: In this lecture, Shaykh discusses piety and peace on the three most important days, verses 13-16

Lecture 9: In this lecture, Shaykh discusses how Angel Gabriel was incarnated in front of Maryam (a) and her reaction, verses 17-18

Lecture 11: In this lecture, Shaykh discusses the significance of dates while explaining verses 25-27

Lecture 12: In this lecture, Shaykh discusses the fast of silence and the reaction of the people to Maryam (a) bringing the infant Jesus (a) to them, explaining verses 26-30

Lecture 13: In this lecture Shaykh discusses verse 31 where Jesus speaks to the people during infancy and says that he is blessed wherever he goes.

Lecture 14: In this lecture Shaykh Hamid continues to discuss verse 31 where Jesus speaks to the people during infancy and says that he is blessed wherever he goes. He also touched upon the terrorist attacks in France.

Lecture 15: In this lecture Shaykh Hamid described the 32nd verse which was about treating one’s parents with respect. He also discussed some issues that converts to Islam face.

Lecture 16: Shaykh Hamid discusses verses 34 and 35 of Surah Maryam which is about Jesus (a) being the Word of God and a test for mankind.

Lecture 17: Shaykh Hamid explains verses 36-39 about the last words of Jesus (a) to his nation during infancy and the Day of Resurrection.

Lecture 18: Shaykh Hamid Waqar discusses verses 40-42 about an interesting point leading up to the Day of Resurrection where everything will be destroyed and only Allah will remain and then the beginning of the story of Abraham (a) and his two attributes – the truthful and the prophet. Finally, the start to his conversation with his polytheistic “uncle.”

Lecture 19: Shaykh Hamid Waqar covers verses 43-47. He discusses the conversation between Abraham (a) and his uncle.

Lecture 20: Shaykh Hamid discussed verses 47-48 where Prophet Abraham seeks forgiveness for his polytheistic uncle.

Lecture 21: Shaykh Hamid discusses verses 49-53 finishing the story of Abraham (a) and starting the story of Moses (a).

Lecture 22: Shaykh Hamid discusses verses 54-55 which starts the discussion of Prophet Isma’il bin Huzqil (or Samuel in English)

Lecture 23: Shaykh Hamid discusses verses 56-57 which starts the discussion of Prophet Idris (or Enoch in English)
